Fishing Report for New Mexico

Wondering how the fishing has been in New Mexico? A new fishing report for the week of July 16 has just been published.

Trout fishing has been good to fair on the Canjilon lakes. Anglers have been using worms, salmon eggs and spinners. Same is true for the Chama River, although trout anglers have also been using grasshoppers with success there.

Anglers at Eagle Nest lake have been catching good size rainbow trout from the bank using worms, power bait and spinners.

New Gila Trout Fishing Opportunities

In July 2007, anglers were allowed to fish for Gila trout in selected New Mexico waters for the first time since 1966. Several restrictions were imposed including a limited fishing season between July 1 and September 30. Other restrictions include the use of single barbless hooks on artificial flies and lures and anglers must release all Gila trout caught. A valid Gila trout permit is also required.

In February, a proposal to limit anglers to two flies per line was rejected by New Mexico’s State Game Commission.

Some anglers and guides had expressed concerns that fish on the San Juan River and other waters are being injured when lines with multiple flies break and wrap around fish. Broken lines with flies also are potential hazards to waterfowl and other wildlife.

The Commission also voted in favor of adding portions of Mogollon Creek to the list of Gila trout angling opportunities and extending the season from September 30 to October 31. For more information about the latest Gila trout fishing proposals, click here.

Fenton Lake Closed for Ice Fishing

New Mexico trout anglers will have to fish somewhere else for a while now that Fenton Lake State Park is closed to ice fishers. This lake is popular for rainbow and cutthroat trout fishing.

The closure came after warmer temperatures weakened the ice making it unsafe for anglers.

Trout Fishing the San Juan River

The portion of the San Juan River which runs through New Mexico has become one of the premiere trout fly fishing destinations in the country.

The 4.25 mile stretch of the river below Navajo Dam (near Farmington) has about 80,000 trout in it (including rainbow and brown trout). The water is cool and clean (thanks to the Dam), so trout fishing is good year round!

Trout on the San Juan river average 17", but fish over 20" are abundant. River guide Mike Mora recommends tiny flies, fine tippets, proper presentation and attention to detail in order to fool the San River trout. There's more trout fishing tips and techniques on his web site.

Although the first quarter mile of the river below the dam is catch and release only, most anglers practice catch and release. This is why trout fishing on the San Juan River is so good. There's plenty of large trout for everybody to enjoy catching!
